Reggaetón Works It's Way To Vancouver

If you've moved to Shakira's Hips Don't Lie, you've danced to the Reggaeton beat which is often compared to the contagious hip hop beat. What is Reggaeton and where does it come from? Reggaeton, a popular Latin American music and dance movement is making its way into Canada. Here's how Vancouverites can adjust to its rhythms.

This report focuses on the Spanish speaking countries where Reggaeton first gained popularity. And I'm glad that you have pointed out that the culture of English-speaking Latin American and Carribean countries would be different. I think "gaga" came up because it's a beat that was introduced to Cuba..yes...so he was refering to the African influence in Latin-Carribean music. Maybe, this clip would have been more suitable for a piece on salsa music. When Julio mentioned 'gaga', he did say that he was veering off but this is his theory and he hears the connections between different music genres. I wanted to add a section about "salsaton" (salsa and reggaeton), but I couldn't fit it into this report. So perhaps a Part B. cheers, Nadia

Nadia, That was awesome!!!! I loved it, couldn't stop watching! The rhythms you added were great. I think what Frieda means is that white people move different than latin people given their alternative cultural upbringing. Which is true, except Julio didn't touch upon it, he was talking about the Latin Caribbeans throughout the piece, so I find it strange she made any reference to it at all. She may have misunderstood Julio: he was giving his own theory (if you will) on what reggeaton sounds like to him, but never stating a grand theory. In addition, I didn't hear him state the roots of reggeaton rhythm, rather provide info on various beats, including "gaga" (not reggeanton), that influenced other African-based music in the Caribbean. Hmm. I think what Frieda is asking for is more information on this fabulous piece! Again, great work! :) Cheers

Nice work q_nudli! I do have a couple of comments. In spite what your source Julio implies, not everyone in the Latin America and Caribbean moves the same way... That's an over-statement. Reggaeton is popular in Latin countries and people grind like there is no tomorrow; but the English speaking Caribbean has different culture and music - similar, but different - and don't make it as sexual as the Latinos. Also, there are different 'theories' (if you will) about the roots of reggaeton. Some music experts see it as an amalgamation of reggae and hip hop. Reggae does have African roots, but is different from the African rhythms that your source refers to. cheers
